چکیده

Sensors have been increasingly used for many ubiquitous computing applications such as asset location monitoring, visual surveillance, and human motion tracking. In such applications, it is important to place sensors such that every point of the target area can be sensed by more than one sensor. Especially, many practical applications require 3-coverage for triangulation, 3D hull building, and etc. Also, in order to extract meaningful information from the data sensed by multiple sensors, those sensors need to be placed not too close to each other—minimum separation requirement. To address the 3-coverage problem with the minimum separation requirement, our recent work (Kim et al. 2008) proposes two heuristic methods, so called, overlaying method and TRE-based method, which complement each other depending on the minimum separation requirement. For these two methods, we also provide mathematical analysis that can clearly guide us when to use the TRE-based method and when to use the overlaying method and also how many sensors are required. To make it self-contained, in this paper, we first A preliminary version of this paper is published in DCOSS 2008. J.-E. Kim · C.-G. With this ILP-based optimal solution, we investigate how much close the two heuristic methods are to the optimal solution. Finally, this paper discusses the impacts of the proposed methods on realdeployed systems using two example sensor systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that systematically addresses the 3-coverage problem with the minimum separation requirement.

A semantic-aware role-based access control model for pervasive computing environments

Access control in open and dynamic Pervasive Computing Environments (PCEs) is a very complex mechanism and encompasses various new requirements. In fact, in such environments, context information should be used in access control decision process; however, it is not applicable to gather all context information completely and accurately all the time. Thus, a suitable access control model for PCEs...

An Architecture for Distributed Spatial Configuration of Context Aware Applications

This paper discusses an architecture for spatially distributed storage of contextual configuration information in ubiquitous computing environments. Based on the assumption that we want to integrate arbitrary mobile clients in ubiquitous computing environments, we derive the requirements for the spatial distribution of data, transparent access to context aware configuration data, and separation...

IPS - Indoor Positioning System with Wireless Sensors

Recent developments in the area of ubiquitous and pervasive computing emphasize the interest in context-aware applications. Location is probably the most important context. Indoor location estimation and tracking remains challenging due to the lack of usable and cost-effective technologies. GPS has proved itself for outdoor usage, but it is not suitable for indoor applications due to poor cover...

Situation-Aware Contract Specification Language for Middleware for Ubiquitous Computing

Ubicomp applications are characterized as situationaware, frequently-and-ephemerally-communicated and QoS-properties-associated. Using middleware to provide multiple QoS support for these ubicomp applications will enhance the development of the ubicomp applications. To satisfy the different QoS requirements of various applications in ubicomp environments, which are heterogeneous and resource-va...
